He grins a little at her flushed cheeks and bright eyes.

"I am rather worried about that door." He teases. "What if your brother, or worse, the Lady Hilde comes in?"

She lifts her chin stubbornly. "Then I will remind them that I am a woman grown, old enough to make my own decisions and accept whatever consequences arise from them." Not that the consequences in this case would be so very dire, to her mind.

Her hands still rest on his waist, and she tries to pull him back, a smile quirking at her lips again, mostly because of the teasing light in his eyes. "And hope that love continues to make you reckless."

Faramir laughs, a little breathless at the light in her eyes.

"While it does, I will also point out that a library is really not the most discrete, my jokes aside. Also that we are almost certainly going to be called for eventually."

She sighs, but cannot deny the truth of this. The library does not even have a bar on the door. "We always are. I truly am minded to kidnap you on horseback. We would probably be tracked eventually but I could at least buy us some interrupted time."

She does look frustrated, even a little unhappy. It should not be so difficult to find some private time with her betrothed, to her mind. The fact that they will have the rest of their lives together is little comfort in comparison with her present dissatisfaction.

"While I do not oppose another ride, I do think kissing you on horseback is rather difficult."

He says and caresses her cheek regretfully.

"These days could not seem to drag so long!"

"I had not intended we should stay on horseback. Or that should should permit any to accompany us."

It sounds more wistful than mischievous, and this time when she steps forward and embraces him it is for comfort rather than anything else. "I miss the gardens," she says quietly, resting her face on his chest. "I have never felt so at peace anywhere as I did there, during those days after we first knew our love for each other. And there we had quiet and privacy in plenty."

Perhaps more than they should have, and probably they should not have trysted in the healing gardens as they did, for all that they did not do much that was unseemly. She misses them all the same.

"I do too." He hugs her back and breathes in the smell that is uniquely Eowyn, and reminds him of sunlight on the fields.

"Strange, isn't it? But that was one of the few places we could be just Faramir and Eowyn, and not the Princes off Rohan and the Steward of Gondor."

"That is it," she agrees. She had not thought of it in those terms, but they perfectly capture her feelings. She does not resent her resumed duties here in Edoras, does not feel as caged by them as once she did, and yet...and yet.

She laughs, just a little. "It is strange, particularly when I remember how much I wished to leave them at first, how I hated my enforced idleness. And now I long for a little such time, even if it were but a single afternoon!"

He smiles fondly, running fingers through her hair.

"You would grow bored with inactivity." He says fondly. "But I admit, looking back at those days, they seem an idyll of protected peace, and I miss them equally as I look forwards to being able to make our own times."

The feel of him stroking her hair relaxes her despite herself, and some of that unhappy tension ebbs away. "I would," she admits. "In time. But not until a few days had passed. Surely that is not so much to ask, after months of waiting for your company! Nor were we idle during those days, especially you, with the king's return to prepare! But there was a greater balance; there was time for both the lord and lady, and for Eowyn and Faramir."

It does not help, likely, that she is poised between past and future during this time...still tied to her old life, and not yet free to start the new. It makes for an odd position. But while she understands the difficulty and knows it to be temporary, finding a short-term solution is less easy. She sighs again. "The only option available is to wait, and I have never been contented with waiting."

"True." He sighs wistfully.

"On the plus side, I have been told I am to remain here as ambassador for a time, and that will hopefully, once this official business is done, give us some time together."

She is silent for a moment, taking this in with mixed emotion. "That is good news," she says finally. "And I am most glad to know I will not need to be parted from you so soon. But I take it my brother will refuse my request to move forward our wedding, and has told you as much."

She does not sound angry, merely resigned, and her arm tightens a little around him. "It was a faint hope, for there are many reasons to leave things as they are. But I admit I am disappointed."

"Aye." He sighs softly. "I would have prefered an early wedding, but... at least I do not have to return to Gondor so soon. Once the rush of the official functions are over, you can, at least, take the time to show me around your home."

Lots of time.

By themselves.

Hopefully anyway.

She does brighten a little at that. The past few days have been more busy even than most, and filled with activities not of their choosing. But if he is to stay after the rest of their guests leave, that will give them more time and freedom. "That is true." Eowyn looks up at him and smiles. "I should like to take you to Aldburg, where I spent my childhood. And if you are to be an Ambassador to the Riddermark, at least for a time, it would be as well for you to explore a little more of it."

And surely once these first few, crowded days are past, all the pressing attention on them will relax somewhat. Surely.

Or else she'll just need to be more creative.

"I would like to see your childhood home." he agrees with a smile.

"And of course, I should ensure that I am... well familiar with the lands of Rohan, as Gondor's Ambassador."

Absolutely.

Perfectly innocent reason to go on very. long. rides.

His smile cheers her further. Dissatisfied they both may be with the situation as it is, they are at least together and of one mind. "So you should," she agrees, and this time when she stretches up and takes a kiss it is passionate, but less impatient.

"Is there any answer to that other than yes?" He teases back, but his hands as he pulls her close are as gentle as ever.

I think so, but to where/when? Maybe just a generic ride alone? They'll manage it eventually.

This kiss goes on for some time, but without becoming quite as...involved...as the one of a few minutes previous. Which is as well, for it is not long until the door opens and someone calls Eowyn's name. She steps away from Faramir reluctantly, with one last silent kiss of farewell, then picks up the books she came here to fetch and answers, leaving Faramir to make his own way out more quietly once she is gone. If her lips are swollen from kisses and her skin more flushed than usual, the servant is at least too polite to comment on it to her face. Though the story he tells later in the kitchens causes no small amusement, for no one ever saw Eowyn exiting a library looking so radiant.

Faramir follows after, and the next few days continue in like manner - stolen moments snatched in between long hours of negotiation and formal feasting, as well as the quieter, more personal dinners where the rulers of Gondor and Rohan all get to know each other better in general.

Inevitably, the time wears to a close and when Eomer and Aragorn announce that Faramir is appointed to the post of Ambassador, everyone somehow keeps a straight face. The first few days after the Gondorians leave is still busy, but much less so, now. Now, they have time. Time enough that Eomer agrees to allow them to go to Alburg without too much fussing.

It is a proper procession to get there, of course. But once there, they have even more time to themselves, and Faramir looks at Eowyn as they ride together and thinks that she belongs here, and he is very fortunate to have stolen her away.

Perfect except dammit now I have to BS Alburg! ;)

Eowyn's heart lightens considerably when they leave for Alburg. It is not merely the fewer responsibilities pressing on her, or the fewer eyes watching them (and interrupting), or even the fact that Eomer has clearly given up on any attempt to guard her virtue.

("Don't be foolish, and in Bema's name don't tell me, I don't want to know," was about the run of it, and she'd merely laughed and pointed out the hypocrisy of it all given his own experience, and he'd covered his ears. A most satisfactory discussion between brother and sister.)

No, it is more being away from the Meduseld. It grieves her to acknowledge the fact, but there is no question that she has felt a certain constraint from being there...less present duties, and more dark memories. Already they fade, are rewritten by new and more joyous days, but still they linger. Still she feels herself torn between the past life that has not quite let her go, and the new life she has not quite begun.

There are fewer shadows to chase her heels in Alburg, and what griefs happened here were long ago, and easier to accept. She tells Faramir more of her father on the journey there: how angry she was at him for being so foolish as to get himself killed with his tendency to run headlong into battle (a tendency she does at least admit she and Eomer both share, though they at least try to keep it in check; their father never did).

She does not speak much of her mother.

But for all that lack, she is more at ease on the ride across the plains, and that remains once they reach the house. The staff there all knew her as a child, and have more than a few stories to tell. If most of them are at her expense, they are at least all told with affection. A few of the staff, most notably the cook, are at first inclined to treat this lord of Gondor coldly, but gradually they begin to thaw as they watch how he treats Eowyn. As they see how much she smiles when she is near him.

They have been here but two days, much of which has been spent in putting things to rights and ensuring that all in the area have what they need in supplies. But today, wonder of wonders! She and Faramir ride out so she may show him the lands around the house. Unaccompanied. They should not go too far, for all that it is unlikely any bands of orcs remain in this area, and they are armed (Eowyn with a bow, rather than a sword). But unaccompanied.

Small wonder that Eowyn is radiant.

Faramir has been enjoying himself throughout - he was always an able diplomat at need, but he flourishes, now, able to work without the fear of Mordor on his doorstep. But he cannot deny that the best time he's had in this whole trip has been the journey to Alburg, if only because he can see how Eowyn breathes easier.

(The unsupervised free time is a very big bonus)

"You smile brighter, out here."

Ah well. Though she realize she will absolutely attempt to waylay him now that she has the chance.

"Do I?" She turns that smile on him. "I wonder why that could be. Might it possibly have something to do with your interrupted company? Or could it simply be the weather?"

For it is unseasonably warm today, or at least not so cold as it has been of late, and the winds are still. If they find something to delay them on this journey, at least they will hopefully not need to rush because of being too cold.

"Very much so." He smiles back, delighted to see her joy.

"And perhaps a combination of all three? The sun suits you very well."

She laughs, well pleased by the look of gladness on his face, which suits him at least as well. She leans over and takes a quick kiss; their mounts are all too used to this by now, and barely flicker an ear at the shifting weight of their riders. "Do not distract me with compliments, my lord, or we shall never reach our destination. And it is a place I particularly wish to show thee."

If the horses were inclined to spook, they are now well used to this behaviour from their riders, and Faramir is able to prolong the kiss just a little.

"Ah, well far be it from me to deny you such an opportunity!" He smiles at her. "Thank you for sharing your home with me."
