Doriath... is a disaster. It was always going to be one, of course, but no one ever listens to Caranthir, what does he know.
(He knows this was a stupid plan is what, if only because it will utterly ruin his carefully negotiated trade routes)
He's not at all surprised that the resistance is more fierce than Celegorm and Curufin were espousing. The Oath may drive them, but it's not supposed to make them idiots. It doesn't mean he doesn't fight as furiously as ever - he needs the Silmaril back as much as any of them, after all - but it does mean that maybe he's not as careful as he should be.
The sword thrust doesn't even hurt, at first. There's a moment when he simply blinks down and thinks oH.
He really hates stomach wounds. They take so long to kill you. He's very grateful for the angry Sinda who cuts his throat, not that he'll be saying that, or anything else, anytime soon. He's a little sorry that this will hurt his brothers, but it's not as if anyone will really notice he's gone, anyway.
(Not until their budget starts to shrink)
The Halls are a nice surprise - he'd rather been expecting the Void. What's even more surprising is who's waiting for him.
A son of Feanor in the Halls is an unusual sight; their Doom should land them in a very different location. Perhaps the only thing more unusual is the sight that greets Caranthir upon his arrival: a small, mortal woman, her features plain but strong. Against all reason, she looks the age she was when they first met, rather than the age she was when she died hundreds of years ago. There is a gold ring on her left hand, and she wears clothing of familiar design.
Haleth leans against a pillar, her arms crossed over her chest. "You're early," she chides.
"I should think not," she says, pushing off the pillar and walking forward, slowly. Her gaze flickers over him, checking for wounds and whatever deathblow killed him. Or perhaps just becoming reaccustomed to the sight. Time moves strangely in these Halls, but it has been some while.
There's a brief sudden flash of doubt in her eyes, as she wonders if perhaps he doesn't know her after all. But it is gone almost as soon as it happens. "I suppose death must count as some excuse for addling the wits--assuming that we can call this death, for it is entirely unlike what I had always expected. But you are still early; Mandos had told me not to expect you for several decades yet."
A smile blooms on Haleth's face. It feels unfamiliar to her, it's so long since she's worn it.
But, he is here. He knows her. She had been more than willing to wait, and has waited with patience, and yet...the end of waiting brings even more joy than she had anticipated.
"I could make it so again, if you prefer," she says, clasping his hand firmly with her own, her eyes dancing over his beloved form with an obvious, growing gladness. "I would not mind."
Her smile grows, full and unshadowed, and when he pulls at her arm she willingly steps into his embrace. "Caranthir," she says, reaching up to touch his face. It's a long way to reach. He's always been so much taller than she. "Husband. I missed thee."

"You don't look like Lord Namo." He adds.

When she gets closer he steps towards her, reaching out almost shyly to take her hand. "I miss your silver hair." He says, apropos of nothing.
an unexpected Haleth tag appears?

Date: 2023-08-18 03:37 pm (UTC)"I love you no matter what you look like." He shakes his head. "Whatever you find comfortable."
And then shyly, testing the word that he so rarely dared to speak aloud.
"Beloved."
<3 you are so patient with my appearances and disappearances, thank you

Date: 2024-05-15 05:56 am (UTC)"I missed you too. My Haleth. My fiery chieftain!"
He leans into her embrace, bending to kiss her. It feels almost unreal, to have this again, when he'd thought to have lost her forever.
