Or he might not. I realize you're used to thinking in terms of tactics, possible outcomes and planning for the future and long-term strategy, but that doesn't work very well with emotions. At least, not at the beginning of things.

You can try. But it can backfire, especially if anything you try to anticipate isn't based on both parties' expectations. It's a relationship, not a war.

By talking a lot? Desires change, expectations change. Maybe not much, but even if what you want doesn't change, life does. So you have to keep making sure you're on the same page.
