"Such was my plan." Once, she might have asked if it would be beneath his dignity, either to deliberately provoke him or because she still misunderstood his nature. Now she does not. "I have a bedroll with me, and blankets. We will not need to lie on dirt alone."

"I've slept on worse." He grunts, and in short order they're curled together.

"You don't mind me being this close?"

"No." His arm is around her waist as he spoons her from behind. To emphasize her answer she rests her arm atop his and threads their fingers together, then brings their joined hands to her mouth. It is not a kiss. That would be too quick. Instead she simply prsses her lips against his fingers, a further point of contact between them.

His fingers twitch in surprise, and then his breath huffs out in a relaxed sound as he buries his nose in her hair.

"Sleep well then, Haleth."

Haleth sleeps lightly and wakes early, just as dawn is tinging the sky. She's not one to lie idle in bed; she's not one to be idle at any time. But this morning she does not move once awareness returns to her.

She has never awoken like this, lying enclosed in the arms of another. She never thought to do so. Opportunities might have arisen in time, no doubt, but they would not have been with this person, and she would have refused them.

No, this opportunity is unforseen, a thing she had not dared to hope for even once she learned she might have reason to hope. Haleth has never been short of courage (or perhaps is too stubborn for fear, as her lost twin used to claim). But things have never happened as expected with Caranthir.

She can only be grateful for that fact as she lies stretched alongside him, tucked under a blanket and watching early morning light color the world. It is a rare thing for Haleth to be still and rarer for her to be content, but at this moment she would not wish any change.

Caranthir is lax against her, eyes glazed in reverie, relaxed as he almost never is, as, indeed, Haleth has probably never seen him. He doesn't even stir until she does, blinking lazily at her in sleepy content.
